A short boat ride off Lombok, the Gili Islands are what a lot of people picture when they daydream about a tropical escape. Three tiny specks of white sand and turquoise water, and not a single car or motorbike on any of them. Renting a villa here is one of the most relaxing things you can do in Indonesia, and it's easier to reach than you'd expect.
Three islands, three moods
The Gili Islands of Indonesia each have their own character, so picking the right one shapes your whole trip. Gili Trawangan, the largest, has the liveliest scene, with beach bars, dive shops and a sociable buzz after dark. Gili Air strikes a lovely middle ground, quiet enough to unwind but with enough cafes and restaurants to keep you fed and happy. Gili Meno, the smallest, is the honeymooners' choice, all silence, hammocks and empty sand.
For a villa escape I lean towards Gili Air. It has the best mix of calm and convenience, and the villas there tend to sit close to the water without feeling isolated.
Life without engines
The no-vehicle rule is the islands' magic ingredient. You get around on foot, by bicycle, or in a cidomo, the little pony carts that clip along the sandy lanes. It sounds like a novelty, but the effect is profound, the islands are quiet in a way beaches rarely are, and you sleep better for it. Your villa mornings are soundtracked by birds and surf rather than scooters.
It does mean packing light and being ready to walk your bags a short way from the harbour, so soft luggage beats a rigid suitcase on the sand.
What villa life looks like here
Gili villas run from simple bamboo bungalows with a plunge pool to polished modern houses with proper kitchens and staff. Prices are generally gentle for what you get, and even a modest budget stretches to a private pool and a short walk to the beach. Snorkelling straight off the shore is superb, with turtles a common sight, so a mask and fins earn their place in your bag.
Getting here means a fast boat from Bali, around two hours, or a shorter hop from Lombok. Book the crossing and your villa together, arrive by early afternoon, and you'll be swimming in that impossibly clear water before the day is out. Few escapes feel this complete.
